This document produced by HRiE is part of our school resource kit (which can be accessed in its entirety in the 'communicating HRiE' section of our resource library). New Zealand’s founding document, the Treaty of Waitangi, predates the Universal Declaration of Human Rights by 108 years. Yet as the English Magna Carta (1215) has general human rights significance, so the Treaty has particular human rights significance in Aotearoa New Zealand. This resource links the articles of the TOW to human rights and incorporates discussion on the issues surrounding the rights of indigenous peoples to self-determination.
