Compass - The language barrier

This activity is a simulation of the difficulties that refugees face when applying for asylum: from the frustrations and emotional factors, while overcoming the language barrier to the discrimination during the application procedure. It demonstrates the importance of both language and intercultural education and develops empathy through being aware of the frustrations refugees face when applying for asylum. Developing a class agreement

In this activity  students gain an understanding of the difficulties and processes involved in treaty negotiations. It will help them to appreciate the relationship between establishing a code of rights & responsibilities, and  living up to an agreed standard of behaviour within everyday occurences. With an emphasis on group participation in the creation and protection of rights, an agreed set of rules and responsibilities is established for the group. Curriculum values of equity - Tika/pono and respect for others - Manaaki/ãwhi, are emphasised. (Part of the HRiE School Resource Kit)

A Primary and Intermediate activity which can also be adapted to Secondary schools. Involving email and letter correspondence this activity promotes communication skills and understanding between different groups of young people. Applicable to learning languages, social sciences, english and arts learning areas.

Taking the human rights temperature of your school

A whole school activity which is crucial to development as a rights respecting community. This activity will have students and teachers alike examining thoughtfully and critically the human rights climate at their school and making connections between the need for a safe school environment and international standards of human rights. Curriculum values of 'integrity - Ngãkau/tapatahi' and 'Respect - Manaaki/ãwhi' are encouraged by making all members of the school community equally accountable for the protection of human rights.
